The past eight months has been such a great time of personal development. I have learnt so much from the first semester of the Māori Visual Arts programme. During this time I have been developing my art and experimenting with new designs. This creative process allows me to create quite a few paintings and now I need to clear out my studio!

Everyday for the month of September I will have a painting on sale, up to half price! Small ones and larger ones. All of them will be unique, one of a kind original paintings. It's a win / win; You get a bargain and I get to buy more paint for the next series. Your support directly helps me to keep studying and creating.

The Unfolding, the circular pattern was my starting point. It represents the light separating the darkness, in the beginning of the universe, when life began and light and knowledge entered the realm of man. It is my revelation point, the unfolding or the beginning of my journey.

In the first semester of my studies, I was looking at genealogy (whakapapa) and the connection Māori have with the land, each other and the created order. I particularly enjoyed learning about kōwhaiwhai (the painted designs on the rafters of the Māori meeting house). These designs have found their way into my new paintings, in a fusion of two cultures.

From my Winter Bloom Collection. A series of beautiful paintings, reminiscent of abstract flowers.
In the past year, my whole life has been turned upside down with the discovery of my birth family, heritage and culture. This adventure has brought such colour and joy to my life. It is like the late bloom of winter; just when you thought all had been done, there is another season, another blossom of life. Multiple layers of acrylic paint with iridescent and metallic inks on canvas.

The Journey Home collection of paintings is the story of discovering family, exploring culture and understanding identity.
Across the Waters, is one of the first paintings of my collection. I was researching the ancestors journey across the waters from their original homeland. They set out on their waka, being guided by the stars, in search of new land and a new life. It would have taken such courage and strength, to launch out with their families into the unknown. This is how I felt, packing up all that I had and leaving all that I knew, to venture home to a land I know nothing about. It is both exciting and scary to begin again, but I feel compelled to take the journey.

Tangata Whenua, this is one of the first Māori words & concepts I understood in my journey home - 'People of the Land'. The connection Māori have for their land & nation, the earth itself, the ancestors that have passed through the veil & the family present now. It is more than just living on a patch of ground in a house, it is what it means to belong - to a people, to a place.

Yesterday's Dreams 1 & 2
From my new series exploring culture and identity. To me, the hui feather represents the beauty and knowledge of Māori that was lost during the years of war and land confiscation. The native bird was hunted to extinction for the sake of social status, greed, power and control. But I see hope on the horizon, it is a new day and there is a resurgence of value for the things that have been lost.
